What is the Common Good?

As the most western settlement in the United States and one of its poorest villages, it is difficult to reach the harbor city of Port Orford and even harder to sustain a living. At the local food bank, The Common Good, colorful workers offer local, sustainable food to fellow residents that is guilt-free, empowering, and wholesome.

Film Summary:

Filmed over a course of several weeks, The Common Good documentary focuses on a rural, food bank and the community it serves.  We will learn what it takes to endure poverty and explore the emotional impact it has on the citizens of Port Orford, Oregon.  

Through interviews and daily filming of activities, The Common Good follows volunteers and recipients through the daily struggles of running a food bank while facing the economic hardships of rural life.  We will hear stories that give clues about the causes of poverty in rural America and the impact it has on our future.  Through generous donations and mounting support from local farmers, residents and community clubs,  The Common Good aims to bring nutritious food and better living to all who reside in Port Orford.

Meet The Team

Sandra Mesrine
Director

After a successful, award-winning career in documentary, fashion, and portrait photography for a variety of publications and media, Sandra began creating documentary films for the internet in 2011. Her films engage audiences for social change, featuring persons who often lack representation or power in the media. Her last short film, Women, Steel and Fire, was documentary on female farriers and appeared at the 2016 Equus Film Festival in NYC.

Brian Price Producer/Writer

Brian is a lecturer of psychology at Coventry University. He has written and worked in many countries in Western and Central Africa and South Asia addressing humanitarian needs in social justice, poverty, global mental health, and international program development.

Andreas Juell
Writer

Andy is a published novelist and award-winning writer, editor and freelance journalist. His most recent book, "The Littlest Racehorse," is a story of losses and gains in the aftermath of the most dangerous week in American history, the Cuban Missile Crisis. Andy is directly involved in the project by his regular work with the food bank, The Common Good, and has come to know extensively its volunteers, beneficiaries, the local culture, and the social issues facing the residents of Port Orford.

Badger Creative
Post-Production

Badger Creative is a film production and web design firm based out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  The Post-Production process (editing, color and sound) will be done under the direction of Josh Wolf, co-owner of Badger Creative.  He is a graduate of UW-Milwaukee Film program and offers great expertise to the technical creation of the film.  In the past, he has worked on short-form documentaries for non-profit organizations around his city to help bring awareness to the issues we face as a society.
